By default Kinde sends your users' sign-up and sign-in emails, one-time passcodes and password reset codes from no-reply@kinde.com. Point Kinde at Groundmail's SMTP relay and those emails come from your own domain, and each one shows up in your Groundmail email log with its delivery status.
Prerequisites
- A Groundmail account with a verified sending domain. A subdomain such as
mail.yourdomain.comworks well. - A Kinde business, and a role that can change environment settings.
Kinde asks you to set up the email sender before you make an environment live. If your production environment is already live, try it in a staging or test environment first.
Create an SMTP credential
In Groundmail, open SMTP. Under Create credential, name it Kinde and click Create SMTP credential, then copy the password. It's shown once.
Add Groundmail as Kinde's email sender
- In Kinde, go to Settings → Environment → Messaging → Email Sender.
- Enter a Sender name, usually your business name.
- Turn on Use custom sender. The SMTP details appear.
- Enter the Sender email: an address on your verified Groundmail domain, for example
noreply@mail.yourdomain.com. - Enter the SMTP details:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Server name | smtp.groundmail.dev |
| Port | 587 (or 2525 if 587 doesn't connect) |
| Username | groundmail |
| Password | The SMTP credential from step 1 |
Both ports use STARTTLS, which Kinde supports.
- Click Send test email. Kinde sends it to the address you're signed in to Kinde with.
- When it arrives, click Save.
From now on, Kinde sends these emails through Groundmail:
- Sign-up and sign-in emails
- One-time passcodes
- Password reset codes
Kinde still sends team invitations and data export notices itself.
Check it works
Sign in to your app with a passwordless code or request a password reset. The email arrives from your address, and it's listed under Emails in Groundmail with its delivery status. Bounces and complaints are handled there like any other email.
Until you add a payment method, Groundmail only delivers to your own account email. Add one under Settings → Billing before your users sign up.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Send test email spins or times out | Check the port is 587 or 2525. If your network blocks 587, use 2525. |
| Authentication failed | The username is groundmail for every account. The password is the SMTP credential, not your API key. Create a new credential if you lost it. |
domain is not verified |
The Sender email must be on a domain you verified under Domains. |
| Users in the middle of signing in still get Kinde's address | Kinde switches sender at the next session. New sign-ins use your address. |
| Kinde shows an Email sending issue banner | The credential was revoked or replaced. Create a new one and update the password in Kinde. |
To go back to Kinde's own sender, turn off Use custom sender and click Save (only while the environment isn't live).
